Room Lenz
Go and buy from your home depot ( this is for a one set item 1-4). I made 3 in one go.
1) 20 feet of 2”/2.5” pvc pipe. Get the high density type would be best. Thicker the better
2) Get some polyester filling. This you will need to get from home depot or aquarium shops. This is normally white in color. They are used to filter the water
3) Buy some plywood preferably thick about ¾ to 1” thick. You will need to have 2 pcs of wood per set of room Lenz. Thicker the better as it will give some weight to the plywood.
4) Some paint, spray on is okay ( not a must, but if you have a wife then this is must)
5) Wood hole saws around 2” or 2.5”( if you can cut perfect round with a jig saw or a router then not a must)
6) Drill
7) Jig saw
8) Saw
9) Sandpaper
10) Liquid nails
Step 1
Okay cut the pipe into 3 pcs of equal lengths. Normally I heard the right length is 4.8- 5 feet long.
Step2
Then cut the plywood into some thing like a square and can fit the 3 pipes into. The spacing for each tube should be around 3” to 4”. So use your estimation skills here.
Mine I remember was 18” by 12” . The bigger the base the more stable the room Lenz while be.
Okay then mark on the wood the place where to drill the holes. Remember they need to be space apart by about 4”. Use estimation skills to balanced the distances.
Then on the place that you have marked draw a circle. This circle should be the same diameter has the pipe diameter you bought. If you have a hole saw, then you don’t have to draw the circle. Just use it to cut the circle. I recommend you buy the hole saw makes life easy as you will have to cut 12 holes ( 2 sets)
Step3
After you have cut the holes on the wood you will have 2 plywood boards with each 3 holes each ( one for the top and another for the bottom) per set. Then take the pipes and fit it into the holes. If your holes are big, just use some glue to stick it together. If you can get a small nail in that would be better to hold the glue and pipe together while the glue hardens. Do the same for the top and bottom piece of wood. Preferably if your hole is just right makes life easier as it will stick better with the glue. A glue to use is the liquid nails. By now the room Lenz should look like the professional pictures. So from the top view you should be able to see the bottom of the tubing. Don’t close the holes leave it open
Step4
After this, take you Dacron/ polyester filling and take about a handful of filling say about bigger than your hand size. Shaft this filling into the shafts. Play around with this.
Filing for shaft one(left) should be at the bottom
Filling for shaft two(center) should be at the middle
Filling for shaft three(right) should be at the right
You can use a broom stick to shaft the filing in. Play around with the location of filling and use your ear to find tune.
The method of different tuning each pipe is our the room Lenz works. They cancel different frequency due to this tuning.
Step5
By now you are done. After this is cosmetics, I sprayed mine black like the original room Lenz
Step6
Then place the wood Lenz behind the speakers and use it and tune by ear.
If your room Lenz is not stable, remember the pipe now is 5 ft tall they can topple over if you base is small and light. You have the choice of ending another layer or put some metal on it to make it stable. I made mine with Indonesian hardwood marine ply which very dense. They are about 1.5x the weight of normal plywood. This helps to stabilize the room Lenz.
On using it I can’t advise you as my speaker is dipole (open baffle) I use it directly behind the speakers. Your results might vary. The distance behind the speaker is critical has most speakers will always have a back radiate wave more with dipole (half front half in the back), conventional box speakers is (80% in front about 20% at the back). I place mine close to reflect this back wave forward. Too close and you gain a lot of body but lose on the open sounding. Further is more open sounding but less body.
After you have done this you will be amaze that it gives a nicer improvement and the super feeling that you actually made something that sounds better. Best part everything almost comes from your own home depot.
